Freedom of information and privacy
The Northern Territory Information Act (the Act) provides the community with rights to access government information, including personal information. The right to access information is limited in some circumstances. The Act also protects the privacy of personal information held by public sector organisations by giving individuals the right to access and the right to correct their personal information, and ensuring that organisations collect and handle personal information responsibly.
You have rights to make applications to Tourism NT on privacy and FOI matters. We encourage you to contact us first to discuss any application you wish to make. We may be able to assist you without the need for an application. Information on how to lodge an application is at the bottom of this page.

Your personal information
Personal Information is any information a public sector organisation holds from which a person’s identity is apparent or is reasonably able to be ascertained.
Tourism NT maintain procedures and standards and take all reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access to and modification or disclosure of personal information.
Tourism NT will also take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse and loss.
Personal information is kept only for as long as it is needed. When personal information is no longer needed for the purpose it was originally collected, it will either be destroyed or permanently de-identified.
You can make a request to Tourism NT if you would like access to any personal information held by Tourism NT. Access will be provided unless the information is sensitive, providing access is complex, or there is a law that requires access to be refused. If you request photocopies of documents or copies of photographs or other media, charges may apply.
Protecting your privacy
The Act protects the privacy of personal information held by Tourism NT by providing the right to access and correct personal information, establishing a framework for the responsible collection and handling of personal information, and providing remedies for breaches of privacy of an individual’s personal information. The Act contains 10 Information Privacy Principles that provide for the collection, use and disclosure, management and openness of personal information that Tourism NT deals with.
If you are concerned that your personal information has not been protected, or that Tourism NT has breached your privacy, you should make a complaint in writing, setting out your name and contact details, and the circumstances that lead you to believe that your privacy has been interfered with. Please provide as much detail as possible such as date, time, location of incidents, who did what, and the names and contact details of any witnesses.

If you are not satisfied with the response you receive from Tourism NT in relation to a privacy complaint, you can then lodge a complaint with the Northern Territory Information Commissioner. The Office of the Information Commissioner.
Collection and use of information (including websites)
Tourism NT generally collects, holds, uses and discloses the following personal information:
- on internet users based on their interaction with websites and social media accounts owned or operated by Tourism NT;
- on consumers provided to the organisation by the individual, a third party, such as a travel agent, or from a marketing organisation;
- on travel partners. Tourism NT and endeavour to seek the consent (express or implied) of the individual or their representative company to collect, hold, use and disclose this information. This information may be disclosed to Tourism NT’s tourism partners;
- relating to the employment, development and management of departmental personnel
Visitors to Tourism NT websites, on a voluntary basis, may supply additional personal information when:
- participating in online forums, surveys and chat rooms
- posting information on bulletin boards or through social media
- completing nomination and application forms
- requesting information via email.
The amount of information Tourism NT collects depends on the service or request that is being provided to an individual.
Information is collected and stored when a user accesses a site managed by Tourism NT. This information will include:
- the identity of the user’s Internet browser,
- the user’s operating system,
- the user’s IP address and domain name of their Internet Service Provider,
- pages accessed and down loaded by the user,
- the path of the user through Tourism NT webpages and their activity,
- the date and time of visits to the site
- the address of the last site the user visited.
Use of information
Information collected by Tourism NT is only that related to core functions and activities. One of the core functions of Tourism NT is marketing the Northern Territory as a travel destination. Tourism NT uses information collected to market the Northern Territory.
Tourism NT may use personal information to contact the individual for direct marketing or market research purposes.
Tourism NT may use personal information to provide direct communication through email, targeted and retargeted advertising, personalised websites, social media contacts or other means. Tourism NT will use information on internet usage for the purpose of targeting specific content to users for the purpose of marketing the Northern Territory as a travel destination. Where appropriate, Tourism NT will prominently provide a notice in each direct communication specifying how an individual can request to discontinue future direct marketing or market research communications.
Tourism NT uses personal information for statistical purposes. Where information is used for statistical purposes, all information capable of identifying an individual user will be removed. Statistics compiled from personal information may be made public, however no information enabling identification of any individual will be included in such statistical material.
Tourism NT uses personal information to learn more about people using its websites and social media. Tourism NT may collect, collate, and analyse this information to better understand and target its users and audience. Tourism NT may use this information to specifically target messages to users.
IP addresses are used to analyse trends, administer the site, track users’ movement, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.
Personal information may be shared with:
- Tourism NT commercial and corporate offices located both nationally and overseas
- Regional tourism organisations
- Cooperative marketing partners
- Third parties under contract to Tourism NT
- All parties with access to this information will manage it in line with Tourism NT’s policies and legislation.
Tourism NT will not disclose personal information for any reason other than the above situations without sufficient consent, unless disclosure is to prevent a threat to life or serious illness, required to do so by law or for investigation proceedings of suspected unlawful activity.
Some websites managed by Tourism NT contain links to third party websites. Tourism NT is not responsible for the privacy practices of those linked sites.
